SEO in 2020

What does the state of SEO look like in 2020? The SEO landscape is very dynamic and is constantly evolving. The more things stay the same, the more things change. Yes, there are some aspects of SEO that will always remain, optimize for mobile users, make sure to put relevant keywords in your page titles, etc. But other things continue changing, some of them small and some of them major. This year Google made their most significant change to the way they handle search with their “BERT” algorithm update, their biggest change in the past five years. Google is trying more and more to be the end destination of its users’ journeys. (think zero-click search and people also ask)

People have been saying for years now that SEO dead! But if you were to look at the search trends for terms like “SEO”, “SEO help or SEO professional” you might be singing a different tune and you probably are thinking about starting to reinvest in your SEO efforts.

SEO is certainly not dead, it’s evolving! You just need to evolve with it. If you just stick to the same old thing, your site will be left behind and nobody wants that.

We have put together a list of SEO strategies and tactics that will work and help you dominate the SERPS in 2020.

On-page SEO - On-page SEO is a great place to get quick wins, you can start by tweaking and cleaning up the code of the page and remove any excess page bloat. Replace the “strong” tags with “bold tags make sure to use actual h1, h2, h3, and h4 tags. Don’t just make a heading look like a heading, make sure to use the proper markup. All these little changes can lead to quick wins.

* bonus tip - When making a change to a page, go into Google search console and resubmit the page

Schema Markup / Structured Data - Schema markup is a great feature that should be added to your site. You can find schema markup at Schema markup can be added to pages on your site to create an enhanced SERPS description, which helps your site stand out in a sea of crowded search results.

Schema Markup

While structured data is not a ranking factor, but your site’s CTR (click-through rate) is a ranking factor and search results with more extensive rich snippets (like those created using Schema) will have a better click-through rate and thus will help your site.

It’s important to remember that structured data will help you communicate to Google what your webpage is about and with Google wanting to provide the best search results to users, having your site optimized with structured data via is only going to result in a win-win for you, your site visitors, and for Google.

Schema can help by providing context to an otherwise ambiguous webpage. So don’t wait any longer and start planning out how you can go about adding schema markup to your site.

Mobile SEO - Mobile SEO is more important now than it ever was, with Google moving to mobile-first indexing back on July 1st, 2019. Google made the switch as they wanted to improve the mobile search experience, which makes sense with all the mobile phones being used.

In order to be able to succeed in 2020, if you don’t have a mobile-friendly and mobile-optimized website, you are already falling behind and you need to take action immediately. You can no longer wait it out and are putting yourself at a huge disadvantage.

Zero Click Search - If you haven’t noticed, Google has been slowly adding features to the SERPS such as featured snippets, people also ask, Knowledge graphs, and so on. With all these new features that Google now has available, it means that they are now answering a user’s query on the SERP itself, without them having to click away anywhere. Hence the zero-click search! There are ways to optimize for these types of results, but that’s a topic for another time.

Quality Content - You have heard it before, that content is king! There’s a reason for that saying as content will have an effect on everything in SEO, strategy planning, the structure of your site, blog post, social media posts, to the types of links you build. To succeed in 2020 and beyond, you will have to create content that that is both relevant and valuable. After all, without content, you will be just be providing Google and your users with pages that are filled with just images and white space, which won’t go over well with Google as they want to provide their users with the most relevant results as possible and a site that is essentially blank won’t be beneficial to their users.

Link Building - Links remain an important factor in helping your site rank in 2020 and beyond. Focus on creating quality content for your site and in turn, you will be able to build links and attract links back to your site.

Voice Search - With Google assistant, Microsofts Cortana, Amazons Alexa, and Apple’s Siri, voice search is not going away anytime soon. In fact, it will continue to grow and be used for more and more searches. As of January 2018, there were an estimated one billion voice searches per month, per and according to Google, 20% of mobile queries are voice searches.

As voice search becomes more and more popular, more people will start to type search queries the same way they speak.

Mobile search queries tend to be long-tail searches and very specific. The reason for this is that users want an accurate answer to the exact question they asked.
